The H2 Chip Fills a Six-Year Gap
Apple dropped the AirPods Max 2 on Monday with zero warning — no keynote, no leaks, no “One More Thing.” The headphones cost $549 and ship with the H2 chip, the same processor that has powered the AirPods Pro 2 since 2022. For a product that sat on the H1 chip for over five years while every other AirPod moved on, the upgrade is overdue.
The feature additions are significant. Adaptive Audio blends noise cancellation and Transparency mode in real time based on surroundings. Live Translation handles real-time conversations across languages — though it requires an iPhone with Apple Intelligence running iOS 26.4. Voice Isolation prioritizes the wearer’s voice on calls. Conversation Awareness drops media volume when you start talking to someone. And the Digital Crown now doubles as a camera remote for iPhone and iPad. “The sound quality is remarkably clean, rich, and acoustically detailed,” said Eric Treski, Apple’s director of Audio Product Marketing. A new high-dynamic-range amplifier promises cleaner output, and Spatial Audio gets improved instrument localization, tighter bass, and more natural mids and highs.
Same Design, Same Battery, Same Smart Case
For all the internal upgrades, the exterior is unchanged. Dimensions: 187 x 168 x 83 mm. Weight: 386 grams. Colors: midnight, starlight, blue, purple, orange — identical to the 2024 USB-C refresh. The polarizing Smart Case, widely compared to a handbag, returns untouched. The mesh canopy that loosens over time has not been redesigned. Neither has the condensation issue some users report inside the ear cups.
The biggest miss is battery life. At 20 hours with ANC, the AirPods Max 2 trail the Sony WH-1000XM6 and Bose QuietComfort Ultra 2 by a full 10 hours — and the Sennheiser HDB 630 by 40 hours. At $549, Apple is still asking buyers to pay $100 more than Sony’s flagship for fewer hours of playback. Bluetooth moves from 5.0 to 5.3, and lossless audio at 24-bit/48 kHz is still wired-only over USB-C. For existing AirPods Max owners, the H2 chip’s feature parity with the rest of the AirPods lineup is welcome — but the unchanged body and battery make this a spec-bump update, not a generational leap.
