Elon Musk at $839 Billion Is in a League of His Own
There has never been a better time to be a billionaire. Forbes’ 2026 World’s Billionaires List counted a record 3,428 individuals — 400 more than in 2025. Their combined net worth: $20.1 trillion, a $4 trillion jump from last year, driven by AI’s explosion, surging stock markets and favorable fiscal policies worldwide.
At the top, Tesla and SpaceX co-founder Elon Musk stands alone at $839 billion. That fortune is more than triple that of Larry Page, who ranks second at $257 billion. Musk’s wealth has been supercharged by xAI, his artificial intelligence venture, and SpaceX’s soaring private valuation. Together with Google co-founders Page and Sergey Brin ($237 billion), Amazon’s Jeff Bezos ($224 billion) and Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg ($222 billion), the top five alone control nearly $1.8 trillion.
Technology dominates the upper ranks. Oracle’s Larry Ellison ($190 billion), Nvidia’s Jensen Huang ($154 billion), Dell’s Michael Dell ($141 billion) and Microsoft’s Steve Ballmer ($126 billion) all sit in the top 15. The AI boom has been particularly kind to Huang, whose fortune tracks Nvidia’s record-shattering stock performance.
The U.S. Leads, but Crypto and Emerging Wealth Reshape the Map
The United States has a record 989 billionaires on the list, including 15 of the top 20. China, including Hong Kong, follows with 610. India ranks a distant third at 229. The geographic concentration of wealth at the top has never been starker.
Outside tech, the biggest surprises come from crypto and finance. Binance founder Changpeng Zhao ranks 17th at $110 billion, a stunning rise for a sector that was in existential crisis just two years ago. Tether’s Giancarlo Devasini sits at 22nd with $89.3 billion. Interactive Brokers’ Thomas Peterffy ($82.9 billion) and hedge fund titan Ken Griffin ($49.8 billion) underscore finance’s enduring minting power.
The old guard holds firm too. Warren Buffett, at 95, is worth $149 billion. Bernard Arnault and LVMH’s luxury empire stand at $171 billion, making him the richest non-American. Amancio Ortega, the Zara founder, holds $148 billion. The three Walton families collectively control over $420 billion through Walmart.
