From YouTube Stream to Rue Saint-Denis

The most watched study buddy on the internet is getting a physical address. Lofi Girl, the animated character that has accompanied millions of students and remote workers since 2017, is opening its first cafe at 60 rue Saint-Denis in the 1st arrondissement of Paris. The location sits between Chatelet-Les Halles and the Centre Pompidou, one of the most trafficked corridors in the capital.

The brand was born as ChilledCow, a YouTube channel launched by French creator Dimitri Somoguy. The concept was simple: a continuous stream of lo-fi hip-hop beats paired with an animation of a girl studying at her desk, drawn by Lyon-based illustrator Juan Pablo Machado. The channel now has 15.6 million subscribers and nearly 3 billion views across just 319 videos. The girl, her headphones, and her orange cat became one of the most recognizable images on the internet.

The brand has expanded well beyond music. Lofi Girl has partnered with LEGO and Ubisoft for Assassin’s Creed collaborations, runs over 20 live streams across genres from jazz to synthwave, and acquired Montreal-based game studio Mooncubes in August 2025 to develop “Spirit City: Lofi Sessions,” a productivity-focused cozy game.

The official website describes the Lofi Cafe as “un lieu cozy en plein coeur de Paris pour faire une pause, travailler et se detendre.” No opening date has been confirmed. No menu, no pricing, no hours. Just a waitlist sign-up and a storefront already decorated with the iconic character and her cat, visible to passersby on rue Saint-Denis.

The space is expected to function as a hybrid cafe-coworking spot: soft lighting, comfortable furniture, and continuous lofi music. Think of it as the physical version of the YouTube stream, a place where you sit down, plug in, and get to work. The location makes strategic sense. The 1st arrondissement draws both tourists and professionals, and the area between Les Halles and Beaubourg is packed with foot traffic.

The irony has not been lost on observers. Journal du Geek pointed out the obvious paradox: a brand built on calm and concentration is about to open a venue that will likely be overrun by crowds, at least in its first weeks. There is nothing cozy about waiting in line for a seat. But that is the kind of problem most startups would kill to have. Lofi Girl went from a looping animation to a cultural franchise, and now it is betting that the millions who study with her online will show up in person.
