Claude Dethrones ChatGPT as the Top AI App in the US

Claude surpassed ChatGPT as the most downloaded AI app in the US App Store. Downloads surged 240% as over one million users sign up daily.

  • Claude is now the number one free app on the US App Store, overtaking ChatGPT for the first time.
  • US downloads of Claude surged 240% month-over-month in February, reaching 1.1 million additional installs.
  • More than one million people are signing up for Claude every day, according to Anthropic’s chief product officer.
  • ChatGPT uninstalls jumped 295% and one-star ratings increased 775% in recent weeks.
  • OpenAI still commands 900 million weekly active users globally, but the momentum has clearly shifted.

Anthropic’s Claude has done what no AI competitor managed since November 2022: knock ChatGPT off the top of the US App Store. Claude is now the most downloaded free iPhone app in the United States, and it holds the same position in Canada, Germany, Ireland, and Luxembourg. The shift is not marginal. It is a full-blown user migration.

240% Download Surge and One Million Signups Per Day

The numbers behind Claude’s rise are staggering. US downloads of the Claude app jumped 240% month-over-month in February 2026, adding 1.1 million installs in a single month. Anthropic’s chief product officer Mike Krieger — the Instagram co-founder who joined the company last year — said that more than one million people are now signing up for Claude every day.

For context, Claude had roughly 2.1 million total US downloads in all of 2026 before the surge began. The app is now adding that volume every two days.

ChatGPT Users Are Leaving — and Reviewing on the Way Out

The flip side of Claude’s ascent is ChatGPT’s freefall in user sentiment. One-star ratings on ChatGPT surged 775% in recent weeks. Uninstalls jumped 295%. The #QuitGPT movement, which started as a niche protest on X, has turned into a measurable consumer trend.

The backlash traces back to OpenAI’s rushed partnership with the US Department of Defense — a deal announced shortly after Anthropic was blacklisted from Pentagon contracts. For many users, that was the line. The perception that OpenAI chose military contracts over user trust accelerated a switch to Claude that was already building on product quality alone.

OpenAI still has scale that dwarfs every competitor. ChatGPT commands 900 million weekly active users globally. But raw user counts mask the trend: the most engaged, highest-value users — developers, researchers, power users — are migrating to Claude at an accelerating rate.

Claude Code Is Winning the Developer War

The consumer app surge is only half the story. Claude Code, Anthropic’s command-line coding agent, has become the preferred AI tool among software developers. The product lets engineers write, debug, and ship code directly from the terminal — and early adopters say it outperforms GitHub Copilot and ChatGPT for complex programming tasks.

Developers are a leading indicator. When the people building software switch tools, the products they build follow. Claude Code’s traction among engineers is creating a flywheel: better developer tools attract more developers, who build more integrations, which attract more end users.

The Anthropic Playbook: Product Over Hype

Anthropic has spent three years doing the opposite of OpenAI. No celebrity partnerships, no Super Bowl ads, no government lobbying blitzes. The company bet that the best AI model would win on merit — and that bet is now paying off in the most visible metric possible: app store rankings.

Dario Amodei, Anthropic’s CEO, has consistently argued that safety and capability are not trade-offs. Claude’s rise suggests users agree. The app’s growth has been almost entirely organic — driven by word of mouth, developer advocacy, and a product that users genuinely prefer over the incumbent.

Scale vs. Momentum

OpenAI is not going anywhere. Nine hundred million weekly active users and deep enterprise contracts create a moat that no app store ranking can erase overnight. But the direction of travel is unmistakable. Claude is gaining users faster than ChatGPT is losing them — and the users Claude is gaining are disproportionately the ones who matter most for long-term platform dominance.

The last time a challenger dethroned an incumbent this quickly in consumer AI was never. It has not happened before. Whether Claude can sustain this pace depends on Anthropic’s ability to scale infrastructure, maintain model quality, and keep shipping faster than a competitor with ten times the headcount and five times the capital. The early signs suggest they can.
